I suppose I should probably know this, but how would I know if there are comments? If a comment has been posted and moderation is enabled, will I get a prompt of some sort?

Go for the conference pitch! As Anon said it is a great way to network and really makes you able to ariculate your story, I have talked about conferences in my blog and feel my attending the Maui conference make the difference between being published and not.
Go for it.
